SHAWVILLE Feb. 22, 2021
On Feb. 22, the selections of the coming K4 class at Dr. S.E. McDowell Elementary School in Shawville were made by random draw.
Principal Grady Robson explained that the pre-kindergarten class offers a curriculum that, while play-based like daycare, is also focused on . . .
introducing numeracy and literacy. Since the program was highly sought after and had limited spots, they were conducting the admissions to the class in a transparent fashion.
“We had 35 registrations last year. This year we have fewer, but it’s a highly desirable thing,” he said. “We wanted to make sure we were doing this in a way that was fair. Last year we had people lining up in the morning.”
Robson explained that the rollout of the program was based on the socio-economic factors of the population, and every school that was selected to have a program was limited to 17 students.
He hoped that there would be a further expansion of the program, since there was clearly a lot of interest.
